If you do this one thing, you will never ever gain another pound: Walk an additional 2,000 steps a day. That's about one mile. It should take about 15 minutes.

Researchers at the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center are the ones who figured this out. Mind you, if you do this, you won't lose weight. You'll have to walk and exercise more than that to shed pounds. But you won't gain any more. "It would be a tremendous victory if we could stop the weight gain," James Hill, director of the Center for Human Nutrition, told USA Today.

Most of the U.S. adult population is either overweight or obese. The average adult gains 1 to 3 pounds a year. So, stop it.

Quick tips: 

bulletTry a daily after-dinner walk.
bulletWalk your dog or offer to walk your neighbor's dog.
bulletTake a walk while your kids are playing sports.
bulletWalk to your neighbor or friend's house instead of calling.
bulletIf you make a call, walk while you talk.

At work:

bulletWalk to a colleague's office rather than calling or sending e-mail.
bulletTake 5-minute walking breaks from your computer. 
bulletStart a break-time walking club with your co-workers.

How about:

bulletWalk, don't drive, for trips less than one mile.
bulletWalk at the airport while waiting for your plane.
bulletTake several trips to unload groceries from your car.
bulletTake several 10-minute walks during the day.
